Diabetes Mellitus – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

March 7th, 2010 by janada

Diabetes mellitus is a medical condition in which the capacity to produce insulin in the body is marginally or significantly reduced. Because of this condition, glucose uptake by the body cells becomes deficient, and blood sugar levels increase. Type 1 diabetic patients produce little or no insulin, and hence need insulin injections to control their blood sugar. Type 2 diabetic patients can control their blood sugar with a combination of diet, weight management, exercise and glucose-lowering medications.

Diabetes mellitus is known in Ayurveda as “Madhumeha”. Ayurveda describes the pathology of this disease as resulting from a disturbed “Meda, Kleda and Kapha”. It is believed that all the body tissues lose their vitality because of this condition.

Type 1 diabetic patients who are dependent on insulin injections should monitor their blood sugar and continue the injections regularly. Type 2 diabetic patients may be able to control their blood sugar with Ayurvedic medicines and other measures like diet restrictions and weight control.

Traditional Ayurvedic formulations useful in diabetes are: Arogya Vardhini, Vasant Kusumakar Rasa, Chandraprabha Vati, Prameha Gaja Kesari, Lodhrasava, Khadirarishta, Jambvasava, Trivanga Bhasma, and Suvarna Makshik Bhasma. Herbal medicines useful in this condition are: Haridra (Curcuma longa), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Karela (Momordica charantia), Saptakapi (Casearia esculenta), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna), Khadeer (Acacia catechu), Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Patol (Trichosanthe dioica), Vata (Ficus bengalensis), Udumbar (Ficus glomerata), Jamun (Syzygium cumini), Bilwa (Aegle marmelos) , Gudmar (Gymnema sylvestre), Methi (Trigonella foenum-graecum), Asana (Pterocarpus marsupium),Shilajit (Purified Bitumen) and Kumbha (Leucas cephalotes).

Most of the herbal medicines mentioned above reduce blood sugar gradually, and stimulate the body to secrete insulin on its own. These medicines also act on the “Meda” and “Kapha” tissues, reduce “Kleda”, and restore body vitality. Thus they act on the basic pathology of this disease. Taken for long periods, these medicines may help to reverse the disease process in diabetes, and give long lasting relief, or sometimes, even a permanent cure. Unlike modern medicines, medical emergencies like hypoglycemia (a sudden lowering of blood sugar) are not seen with the use of herbal medicines.

Long-term complications of diabetes include diseases related to the eyes, nerves, kidneys, heart, brain, intestines, sexual organs, skin and feet. Ayurvedic medicines are very effective in preventing or significantly reducing symptoms related to these complications, and are useful in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Ayurvedic medicines used specially for this are: Tapyadi Loha, Kaishor Guggulu, Agni Tundi Rasa, Vish Tinduk Vati, Kanchnaar Guggulu, Trayodashang Guggulu, Ekanga Veer Rasa, Vaat Gajankush Rasa and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis).

Thus, Ayurvedic medicines are useful both for reducing blood sugar and for treating long-term complications. These medicines can be used independently or as additional therapy to modern medicines. Ayurvedic treatment can significantly reduce the morbidity (severity of disease) and mortality (death rate) associated with diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes Recipes For Your Main Course

March 7th, 2010 by janada

There are a lot of people out there who tend to think that one has to starve oneself if one is suffering from diabetes. But that is not true at all. While it is advisable for you to take care of yourself and your diet with diabetes, it does not at all mean that you need to deprive yourself of any food variety at all. We have here for you some amazing main course diabetes recipes that are great for the palate and for you health as well! Follow these recipes and you are sure to enjoy each and every one of your meals!

In order to make the main dishes lighter, you should choose lighter meats and also trim the fat from them before cooking them. That way, you will further reduce the calories. Here are some healthy main meat dishes for you:

Teriyaki Beef Spirals

1 cup spinach

¼ cup green onions, chopped and low-sodium teriyaki sauce

½ cup chopped water chestnuts

1 lb beef flank steak

Salt and pepper to taste

Take the spinach stems out and layering the leaves on each other, cut them diagonally into thin strips. Mix the strips, onions, water chestnuts and teriyaki sauce. Trim the fat from the meat and make shallow 1-inch cuts on each piece.

Place the steaks in between 2 pieces of plastic wrap and pound with a light hand so as to make small rectangles of them. After taking them out of the wrap, coat the meat with seasoning. Then spread the spinach mixture as well. Roll each meat piece and secure them with toothpicks. Slice in between the toothpicks to get 1″ thin slices. Thread these slices into metal skewers, brush them with teriyaki sauce and grill till done.

Lemon Pepper Steaks

2 boneless beef loin steaks, cut into 1″ thick pieces

1 tsp garlic, minced

1 tbsp oregano, crushed

¼ tsp ground pepper

1 tsp lemon peel, shredded

1 tsp cooking oil

Take away the fat from the meat. Mix the other ingredients and coat it evenly on both sides of the steaks. You can either charcoal grill or gas grill the steaks. Grill slowly on low flame for 15-18 minutes, depending upon how you want your steaks done, turning them once they are done halfway. You could cut the meat into thin strips, across the grain, before serving them.

In order to broil them, you can place the meat on an unheated rack of a broiler pan. You could turn them once they are halfway done and turn and cook them until done.

Orange-Glazed Pork Chops

4 boneless ¾” pork loin chops

¼ cup sugar-free orange marmalade

2 tsp Dijon mustard

¼ tsp Cayenne pepper

1 tsp lemon juice

Salt and pepper to taste

Mix all the ingredients except the chops and seasoning together in a bowl. Trim the fat from the meat and sprinkle them on either side with seasoning. Grill the chops, brushing them often with the glaze mixture, until done.

Take care to make your diabetes recipes with lean meat and use low-sodium and sugar-free ingredients and you will be able to consume healthful, yet tasty meals in spite of your diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms – Causes and Its Treatment

March 6th, 2010 by janada

Type 2 diabetes used to be called “non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus” because the patient is resistant to insulin, or simply does not produce enough for the body to lower the glucose to normal levels. It is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90 to 95 percent of diabetes cases in America.

It usually develops in adults after the age of 45, so is sometimes referred to as “adult-onset diabetes“. Many people are completely unaware they have the condition until they are treated for something else and blood tests reveal elevated blood sugar levels. Occasionally, severe symptoms may develop, and people find out they are type II diabetic when they go to their doctors.

The factors that can increase the risks include genetics, but also poor diet, inactive lifestyle, over-weight, age, and race (type 2 diabetes is more prevalent among African American, Latino & Native Americans).

Those suffering type 2 diabetes will be thirsty and produce excessive urine. They’ll also usually be hungry, suffer from nausea and vomiting, plus increased infections like Candida. Type 2 diabetics often feel fatigued and can suffer from blurred vision.

Type 2 diabetes is close to epidemic proportions in America due to the unhealthy lifestyle of little exercise and unhealthy diets.

Usually type 2 diabetics do not require insulin and can take oral drugs instead. The specific treatment that will work for you depends on a number of factors, including age, overall health and medical history. The severity of the disease and your tolerance to medication will also be taken in to consideration.

As with anything, it is better if it is caught early when the problems caused by diabetes will be less severe, and the damage to the organs of your body will be less. In some cases, the problem can often be kept under control through diet and exercise alone, so you should get a checkup if you are in one of the higher risk categories.

Diabetes Control With Proper Diet

March 5th, 2010 by janada

You are not alone if you have just been diagnosed with diabetes. No one, of course, welcomes that news. The good news is that you can control diabetes for a long time, and possibly even remove its potentially harmful effects by acting immediately.

There are a number of factors concerning diabetes, and the main one may be where you are now in relation to diabetes? If you are at an early stage, and if your doctor believes that you can willingly control your diet, then you may be able to control your diabetes without drugs.

A piece of good news, however, is that if an overweight individual is diagnosed with pre-diabetes, then he or she could reduce that risk simply by losing the excess weight. This also shows that there is a direct correlation between the two. Diabetes can often be pushed back a number of years simply by doing this. In some cases, it may even be completely avoided. It usually takes losing about 7% of your body weight on average, to have this effect. Some may require more, but any weight loss for an overweight person is a move toward better health in the long run.

Once you have created your diet plan, and have calculated in the right amount of calories, you will need to stick to the plan. The reason for this is to regulate your blood sugar levels and keep them as even as possible. This means that it will be important for you to eat everything on your plan at each meal and at the snack times, too. The thing that you do not want is to have your blood sugar levels get too high or too low. Remember that both could be harmful.

Diabetes is not something to play with, but rather something to defeat before it ever comes. Getting started right away can help you avoid the problems that are associated with diabetes.

4 Common Symptoms of Diabetes

March 5th, 2010 by janada

Diabetes is a condition which develops when your body’s insulin (a hormone that helps convert blood sugar/glucose into energy) production becomes inhibited. This has a knock effect on your blood sugar levels which increase due to this lack of insulin. However, the associated symptoms are often difficult to identify. A lot of the time the symptoms are so mild that they are not noticed and in other cases the symptoms take years to develop. In this article I will be discussing four of the top diabetes symptoms that you should look out for.

1) HYPERGLYCAEMIA:- Hyperglycaemia refers to higher than normal blood sugar levels which in most cases are brought about by the lack of insulin in a diabetic person’s body. Insulin usually works as a control mechanism and keeps blood sugar within a normal range (around 80 milligrams per decilitre to 110 mg/dL). Without insulin blood sugar levels can consistently become higher than normal and in diabetics persistent hyperglycaemia is common. Blood sugar levels are said to be hyperglycaemic if they are consistently above 126 mg/dL. With persistent hyperglycaemia comes a number of symptoms which include:

- Blurred Vision.

- Constant Thirst.

- Frequent Urges to Urinate.

- Hunger Pangs.

- Persistent Weakness/Tiredness.

Hyperglycaemia does require your attention. Insulin injections can be used for mild occurrences but more severe occurrences may require medical treatment.

2) HYPOGLYCAEMIA:- Hypoglycaemia refers to lower than normal blood sugar levels. It can be brought about by not eating enough calories on a day to day basis, not consuming enough calories post exercise and excessive alcohol consumption. Although hypoglycaemia can affect all diabetics it is most common in type 1 diabetics when they inject too much insulin. The symptoms of hypoglycaemia include:

- Blurred Vision.

- Dizziness.

- Hunger Pangs.

- Shaking.

- Sweating.

Like hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia will require your attention. Mild occurrences can usually be overcome by eating 10g – 20g of sugar or consuming glucose tablets. However, more serious hypoglycaemia will require glucagon to be injected via paramedics.

3) DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS (DKA):- When your body fails to convert blood sugar into energy it starts to use fat and muscle for energy instead. The breakdown of fat causes ketones (fatty acids) to be released into the bloodstream and over time these build up and lead to the onset of DKA. DKA is most prevalent in type 1 diabetics and is usually brought about by a lack of insulin which prevents your body from getting adequate energy from the available blood sugar. However, it can also be linked with illness and infection. The symptoms of DKA include:

- Abdominal Pain.

- Fruity Smelling Breath.

- Dry Skin.

- Vomiting.

DKA is one of the more serious symptoms of diabetes and will require immediate medical attention. In the worst cases it can be fatal.

4) HYPEROSMOTIC NON-KETOTIC ACIDOSIS (HONK):- HONK is most prevalent in type 2 diabetics. It occurs when the body responds to the high levels of blood sugar by passing additional urine. This can then lead to extreme dehydration and HONK for which the symptoms include:

- Dry Skin.

- Excessive Thirst (which does not disappear following fluid consumption).

- Fevers.

Like with DKA, HONK is very serious condition and requires proper medical attention right away.

I hope this article helps you identify the often elusive symptoms of diabetes. The symptoms can range from the mild (which are normally self treatable) to the serious (which usually require professional medical assistance). However, remember that the symptoms are only an indicator of diabetes. For the best results you should go and book yourself in for an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible and get yourself tested for diabetes.

Every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative but it is intended for general information only. Diabetes is a medical condition and this article is not intended as a substitute for the advice of your doctor or a qualified medical practitioner. If you have any concerns regarding any form of diabetes you should seek the advice of your doctor immediately.
